Chris de Heer was honored this evening with the Hippische Publiciteitsprijs (Equestrian Publicity Award) in recognition of his exceptional contribution to enhancing the visibility of equestrian sports.

Normally, Chris is never short of words, but tonight he was momentarily speechless! During the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, commentator Chris de Heer enthusiastically guided the audience through the fascinating world of equestrian sports. His expert yet accessible commentary on HBO Max and Eurosport made the sport understandable and captivating, both for enthusiasts and for viewers new to the world of horse riding.

Insight and emotion
Chris brought not only technical insights with his commentary, but also conveyed the emotion and intensity of the competition. He had the unique ability to articulate the atmosphere and feeling of the moment, making viewers feel as though they were sitting in the stands themselves. However, his greatest achievement lies in how he made the sport accessible to a broad audience. With simple, clear explanations, he helped even those without experience in equestrianism understand what was happening on the competition floor. Additionally, Chris highlighted what it takes to achieve such performances: the unique bond between horse and rider, trust, and teamwork.

A distinctive approach
Andries van Daalen, chairman of the award committee, said: “During the Olympic Games and more recently at Jumping Amsterdam, you made the sport accessible to a broad audience in your own unique way. This award is well-deserved for someone who has made a visible contribution to equestrian sports!” Chris responded: “I may never win anything in the saddle again, but this Hippische Publiciteitsprijs is a lovely consolation. By the way, I wasn’t alone in Paris—I had fantastic help from three experts. I hope everyone continues to enjoy watching and listening, because I’m not stopping anytime soon!”

A special contribution
The Hippische Publiciteitsprijs is awarded to someone who has made a significant contribution to promoting the equestrian industry. This year, there could have been no better winner than Chris de Heer, who, with his expertise and enthusiasm, brought equestrian sports closer to the general public.
