KWPN-approved stallion Bojengel makes debut at the Paralympic Games
The KWPN-approved stallion Bojengel makes his debut at the Paralympic Games this week. Bojengel was born at the stables of former Sligro CEO Abel Slippens. Before embarking on an international career as a Para Dressage horse, Bojengel was internationally successful in the Prix St. Georges under Tommie Visser and in the U25 with Hungarian rider Jazmin Yom Tov.
Born as Baron ter Kwincke (by Uptown) at Abel Slippens' in Erp, who gives all his horses the suffix ter Kwincke, Bojengel (by Uptown out of Tistie ter Kwincke, elite pref prest PROK by Gribaldi, bred by A.J.L. Slippens from Erp) was approved for KWPN as a three-year-old. In sports, he was ridden by various riders before being sold to Hungarian Jazmin Yom Tov. Since last year, Bojengel has been paired with Hungarian rider Ildikó Fonyódi.
From the European Championship to the Paralympic Games
Together, they competed at the European Para Dressage Championship in Riesenbeck last year, and now Bojengel is making his appearance in the gardens of the Château de Versailles in Grade V. Para Dressage features five levels, referred to as Grade I through V. In Grade V, exercises include all three gaits, lateral movements, and simple changes.
Father and son as parahorses
“The KWPN once organized an auction to benefit the victims of the tsunami disaster,” explains Abel Slippens, the breeder of Baron ter Kwincke, better known as Bojengel. “At that time, I purchased the covering of the stallion Uptown, the sire of Bojengel. Uptown was then owned by Toine Hoefs, who also lived in Erp. Eventually, I covered the mare Tistie ter Kwincke with Uptown, and Bojengel is the result.” Bojengel has since produced many fine offspring, including four Grand Prix horses and the KWPN-approved Inter II stallion Ghandi (out of Beaudea elite pref prest EPTM-dressage PROK by Tuschinski, bred by M.A. de Groot from Erp). “Ghandi is also competed in Para Dressage by American rider Kate Shoemaker.” This shows that not only does Bojengel himself have a pleasant, cooperative nature, but he also passes this trait on to his offspring.
Ready to start
On Wednesday, September 4, at 2:53 PM, Bojengel will enter the Grand Prix A Grade V under his Hungarian rider. Individual medals can be won in this class, and the top eight combinations will advance to the freestyle, which will be held on Saturday, September 7. Hungary does not have a team at the Paralympic Games.
