Paris Olympics: Glamourdale Wins Bronze; Hermès Just Misses the Podium
Prior to the championship, it was expected that several combinations would be contenders for medals. The gold once again went to Dalera and Jessica von Bredow-Werndl, the silver to Isabell Werth and Wendy de Fontaine. The KWPN stallion Glamourdale secured a beautiful bronze medal, followed by the KWPN stallion Hermès, who was just half a percent short of a podium finish.
Five of the eighteen Olympic finalists were KWPN-bred, and an additional five had a Dutch-bred sire, making the presence of Dutch blood in this final quite significant.
Lots of Expression
With a lot of expression, Glamourdale (Lord Leatherdale out of Thuja, by Negro, bred by J.W. Rodenburg from Ouderkerk aan den IJssel) achieved a score of 88.97%. "That was truly fantastic," sighed Lottie Fry afterwards. "It’s been a long week here, and Glamourdale gave it his all. He danced to the music; I’m very proud of him. That medal is really the cherry on top."
Hermès Just Misses the Podium
Performing a freestyle to music by 'power women,' the KWPN stallion Hermès (Easy Game out of Bukkie, by Flemmingh, bred by G. Gijsbers from Loosbroek) achieved a score of 88.43%, just missing out on a medal with Dinja van Liere.
No Mistakes Made
"I think he delivered his best test ever. I don’t think we made any mistakes today. If the others are better, then the others are better. I can accept that," said Dinja van Liere realistically afterwards, not knowing that her score would come so close to the bronze.
Best Freestyle Ever for Fame
Fame (Bordeaux out of Bonaventura, by Rhodium, bred by V.O.F. G. & M. Gerritsen from Leerdam) and Carl Hester secured sixth place with 85.16%. "This is probably the best freestyle I’ve ever ridden," was Carl Hester’s initial reaction afterwards. "Why shouldn’t I retire after this? I’m not sure I can top this."
Self-Bred Jägerbomb
In eighth place, we see Jägerbomb (Dante Weltino out of Udysee, by Jazz) who, with his breeder Becky Moody, achieved a very fine score of 84.35% in their first Olympic Games.
Indian Rock
According to his rider, a somewhat tired Indian Rock (Apache out of Crisjena, by Vivaldi, bred by J. de Bruijn from Schelluinen) scored 81.75% with Emmelie Scholtens, placing eleventh. "I definitely haven’t ridden my best tests in Paris. He performed so well during the winter season, and I felt he was in good shape. But everything has to come together, and I didn’t quite feel that here."
