Paris Olympics: Cekatinka puts Japan in provisional bronze position
Bred by Jan Greve, Cekatinka brought the Japanese team to a provisional bronze position in the second eventing phase of the Paris Olympics. The best KWPN result is in Dutch hands: Janneke Boonzaaijer rode a historic round and is individually in sixteenth place.
The atmosphere is lively during the Olympic cross-country: the French are cheering loudly for all eventing riders, creating a great atmosphere in the palace gardens of Versailles.
Great Horse
Cekatinka (King Kolibri out of Katinka ster prest by Julio Mariner) had only some time faults with the Japanese rider Ryuzo Kitajima. "It’s really an incredible feeling to come out of an Olympic cross like this," says the Japanese rider. "Cekatinka is a great horse for this work. Dressage might not always be her strongest suit, but in the cross-country, she gives it her all. At seventeen years old, she’s no longer the youngest, but her carefulness has guided me fantastically through this course. The plan for tomorrow is to stay clear and hopefully maintain this medal position."
Impressive Career
Cekatinka already had an impressive career with Tim and Jonelle Price: the daughter of King Kolibri won Boekelo in 2018 and placed eighth individually at the World Equestrian Games in Tryon. She was subsequently the best KWPN eventing horse on the WBFSH ranking, putting KWPN at the top of the ranking that year.
Historic Ride for Boonzaaijer
Individually, Janneke Boonzaaijer and Champ de Tailleur (Quidam de Revel out of Vera stb-ext prest by Oberon du Moulin, breeders A.C. Hoogendoorn and G.W. ten Pas from Winterswijk) have the best chances. After a clear cross-country, a historic moment for the Netherlands, the grey gelding is in sixteenth place individually.
A Memorable Ride with Fedarman B
One place lower, we find Fedarman B (Eurocommerce Washington out of Paulien B stb prest by Fedor, breeder Brinkman family from Zutphen), who had some time faults with Boyd Martin. For his rider, it was one of the most memorable rides ever due to all the spectators. "Fedarman B is naturally careful, so I look positively towards tomorrow’s jumping. I think we won’t lose too many points there. He is one of the better jumping horses in the field, so I trust him and all the training hours we have put in together." The American team is in ninth place.
Sold at Three Years Old
Breeder Eddie Brinkman heard a year ago that Fedarman B, born at his farm, was doing well. "I sold him as a three-year-old. He was just saddle-broken then, and he showed a neat jump while free-jumping, although his front leg was a bit normal. With his beautiful markings and good canter, I could sell him to my satisfaction, though I never expected him to be in the Olympics. It’s just great for me when others do well with him. Breeding a good horse, at any level, is our breeding goal."
Cheering from the Crowd
According to his rider Michael Winter, El Mundo, bred by H.G.K.M. Derks, enjoyed the cross-country course immensely. The Numero Uno son was not alone in this, as his rider had never experienced so much cheering from the crowd. "He always goes with a lot of energy, but I had to take the alternative a few times to maintain control. He is bred to jump, so I expect a lot from the jumping tomorrow." The Canadian is currently in 38th place, and the top 25 will advance to the individual final.
Hiarado Drops in the Rankings
Diarado's daughter Hiarado (out of Ubiola stb-ext prest by Ekstein, breeder L.G.M. ten Vergert from Enschede) had a run-out with New Zealander Jonelle Price, causing the duo to drop in the rankings after a good dressage test. "Hiarado has learned a lot, but we are here to perform, not to learn," says a disappointed Price.
Run-out
With Enjoy (Cartano out of Next Joey stb pref prest by Haarlem) bred by her family, Sanne de Jong had a run-out, forcing her to take the alternative, resulting in time faults.
Bad Luck for Don Quidam
Don Quidam (Quidam out of Nairoby keur by Amethist, breeder J. Schurink from Wijhe) was doing well with Australian Kevin McNab, but the rider decided to withdraw halfway through due to an injury. The Czech Miloslav Prihoda Jr. rode Ferreolus Lat (Jaguar Mail out of Veonille II by Royal Dance, breeder A.J.M. van Esch from Eersel), but the duo was eliminated halfway through the cross-country after an unfortunate refusal.
