Although Leon Thijssen had to work hard to win, it was definitely worth the effort: the Dutchman captured the Grand Prix of Drenthe at NIC Assen. With his 12-year-old stallion Tyson (Numero Uno out of Kickyqueen elite sport-jump by Voltaire, breeders: G. Lindeboom and E.J. Meijer of Dalfsen), named after the famous boxer Mike Tyson, 44-year-old Thijssen finished the deciding jump-off round in 33.53 seconds. That time was just fast enough to beat last year's winner, Vincent Voorn with Audi’s Gestion Priemus Z (s.Pucci), who had opened the jump-off with a time of 33.87 seconds. Of the nine jump-off competitors, five emerged clean from the challenging course designed by Kris van Gelder and Marc Kasius. The nine competitors included just one rider from abroad: Tim Stockdale of the UK. He finished third, after clocking a time of 34 seconds aboard FreshDirectKalicoBay(s.Limmerick).

Other Dutch riders also excelled in the Grand Prix of Drenthe, the scene of world-class sport of the highest caliber. Among them was Sjaak Sleiderink, who finished fourth with La Toya 44 (s.Le Cou Cou), and Suus Kuyten, who rode Don Juan (s.Flamenco de Semilly) to fifth place. Both combinations kept a clean slate. Sixth place was for Wout Jan van der Schans, whose horse P-Pilot W (Epilot out of Meatloaf sport-jump s.Indoctro, breeder: L. Dubbeldam ofZwolle) downed a rail. Albert Zoer, the regional favorite with Wollie Bollie (Cantos out of Lucinda by Zuidhorn, breeder: B.W. Vrieling ofGroningen), was ninth. Following in tenth place was Anne Liza Makking with the gray mareWaikiki, sport-jump (Lovis Corinth out of Madonna by Farmer, breeder: A. van Uden of Berghem). Angelique Hoorn ended 11th with the eight-year-old KWPN gelding Zascal (Ovidius out of Carina prest sport-jump by Legaat, breeder: J. Hoorn of Wanneperveen), who had placed fourth in the 2008 VION Cup final. Twelfth place was for Michael Greeve with Exclusive, sport-jump (studbook name: Uvory s.Emilion out of Ivory keur sport-jump by Bergerac, breeder: J. Heins of De Schiphorst).
