Performance test report
November 1990:Approved by the Oldenburg Studbook.
Conformation description 1993:
Contango is a large, well-built stallion with good type. The head is attractive. The neck has good shape and strong muscling but needs slightly more length. The shoulder has good length and placement. The wither should be slightly more developed. The back and loin have strong muscling. The same is true of the croup which, however, should be longer. The stallion has well-developed legs, but the joints should be a bit cleaner. The stallion has excellent hooves.
Hengstleistungsprüfung (100 days) in Medingen (BRD), 1991, total: 146.89 pts, 1st of 53 entries; dressage: 142.03 pts, 1st; jumping: 141.27 pts, 1st.
Performance test in Ermelo, March 8 - 26, 1993 (short test):
Contango had already participated in a performance test in Germany in 1991 and achieved very good results. He is very obedient, honest, and easy on the ground. During light work, he shows very abundant willingness. He has a good mouth and is nice to ride. The stallion has three good, regular basic gaits. The walk is active and has sufficient scope. The trot is big and powerful with good rhythm. The canter is powerful with good carriage. In jumping, Contango shows good push and more than sufficient scope; however, he has little elasticity and does not finish the jump well with his hind end. He often tilts his hindquarters. He gives his rider a good feeling in dressage work and a sufficient feeling in jumping. Good stable behavior. No veterinary remarks. No scores were awarded at the time Contango participated in the short performance test.
Information (based on advisement inspection), 1993:
This dark bay Holsteiner is a 5-year-old by Contender/Calypso II out of a state premium mare by Kronprinz xx. Farther back in the dam-line are the stallions Elan and Ortwin. Although the dam-line is not convincing, it has produced a few good sporthorses. Contango's sire Contender, however, is beginning to garner acclaim. In 1992, his oldest offspring were four years old; and with an index of 168 points, Contender ranks first in his age group. Contango excelled in his 100-day test in Medingen, BRD. He achieved excellent results in the performance test and finished with a very high total score of 146.48 points, ending first in a group of 53 stallions. (This information differs slightly from that published in the Feb. 1991 Jahrbuch Zucht of the Deutsche Reiterliche Vereinigung, red.) Contango finished first in both jumping and rideability. On hard ground, he shows a sufficient walk and a very strong, big trot. In the trot and canter under saddle, the hind leg needs to step farther under the body. Five foals and five yearlings by Contango were evaluated. Their development varies, but on average, appears sufficient. The type is good but sometimes slightly short-bodied. The head has sufficient shape and expression. The neck has good shape but should be longer. The shoulder has excellent length and good placement. The wither is well developed. In general, the connections are strong. The croup has good shape and muscling. The legs are well developed. The front leg is correct, but the hind leg is often somewhat long. The stallion moves with sufficient scope and good reach of the front leg. The hind leg should step under the body with more power.

Offspring report
Offspring (foals) in 1994:This Oldenburg stallion showed a non-uniform collection of foals whose development ranges from good to excellent. There is a clear difference between the foals randomly selected by the KWPN and those selected by the stallion's registered party. The randomly selected foals are generally of a common type. Their riding type varies from insufficient to sufficient. The foals need more nobility. The foals selected by the stallion's registered party show more nobility and better riding type. The head generally has moderate shape and lacks expression but is better in the foals selected by the stallion's registered party. The neck has sufficient length but is generally put on deep. The neck should tie into the wither/shoulder more smoothly. The wither is well developed and has good length. The shoulder is consistently straight but varies in length. The randomly selected foals generally have a short shoulder, while those selected by the stallion's registered party have good shoulder length. The back generally has good muscling, but the loin connection is just moderately strong. The croup is generally short but has consistently good muscling. In the foals selected by the stallion's registered party, the croup has better riding-horse shape. In the KWPN-selected foals, the front leg is generally tight and sometimes back at the knee. This second flaw (back at the knee) was not observed in the foals selected by the stallion's registered party. The hind leg is consistently long and with little angle. The walk has sufficient scope, but the hind leg is not sufficiently active. The trot shows the same: a slow hind leg. The foals show little carriage but sufficient scope. Furthermore, the body position is long in the trot. Several foals show a convincing, powerful, and rhythmic trot. It should be noted that the footing in the inspection ring was very bad. It was observed that the stallion, who has good leg circumference, did not improve leg circumference in the foals out of fine-boned mares. The foal inspected at its home location is consistent with the findings described in this report. The accompanying dams were generally of good to excellent quality. Veterinary findings concern several foals with a hock that is knobby on the outside.
Short summary:
Well-developed foals with moderate riding type and moderately powerful movement.
Foals shown: 29 out of 250 breedings.
Offspring, January 1998 (3-year-olds):
Based on the evaluation/report on Contango's 3-year-old offspring, the now exported stallion has been retained for KWPN breeding.
Offspring, January 2002 (7-year-olds):
Based on the evaluation/report on Contango's 7-year-old offspring, the stallion has been retained for KWPN breeding.
Keur predicate awarded, January 2002:
After an uncertain start with his foals, Contango has proven to be an outstanding breeding stallion. This son of the Holsteiner foundation stallion Contender, now a KWPN-recognized stallion, excels in passing on versatility, size, willingness, and reliability. Contango himself has abundant dressage talent and the required jumping talent. And he remarkably passes on his same talent. Contango, who now serves the breeding industry from the USA, boasts several dozen Z-level offspring. Several offspring from his first year at stud compete at the ZZ-light/ZZ-advanced level. The most renowned of these include Montango, Madorijke, Menuette, Malimba, Milone, and Maverick. As mentioned, Contango also possesses the required jumping genes. Several dozen of his offspring compete at the M- and Z-levels, the most notable of which are the full-brothers Newton and Maroon. Contango has now produced 126 mares which are registered in the studbook, including 58 ster mares and 16 keur mares.
Offspring, January 2006 (11-year-olds):
Based on the evaluation/report on Contango's 11-year-old offspring, the stallion has been definitively approved for KWPN breeding.
Preferent predicate awarded, January 2006:
Contango surpasses other keur stallions. He clearly passes on positive traits in both the dressage- and jumper breeding directions. He has produced offspring in both disciplines which compete internationally. Contango's dressage index is 168 (89% reliability), and his jumping index is 123 (86% reliability). The stallion also scores well in the breeding values for conformation and movement. This fall, his son Citango was approved for KWPN breeding. In addition, Contango is the grandsire of the KWPN stallion Tango.
