Jumping clinic by Henk van den Broek at KWPN Stallion Show
Yet another reason to come to the KWPN Stallion Show on Thursday. Former stallion selection committee member Henk van den Broek, together with his stable rider Renée de Weert, will be giving an interesting spring clinic during the Onori Show, focusing on the training of young showjumping horses.
Last summer, Renée de Weert won the bronze medal at the Young Showjumping Horse World Championships in Lanaken with Labantrix, bred and owned by Henk van den Broek. This Thursday, it won't be Labantrix coming to Den Bosch, but another great talent: the runner-up of the Blom Cup and winner of the Hendrix competition, Nelson (by Highway TN).
"A Beautiful Story"
"There's a beautiful story behind it," says Henk van den Broek. "I've been crazy about Highway from the start. I covered mares with him directly and trained Zoï Snels when he rode Highway as a 5- and 6-year-old. I was there when another rider had to be found for him. It was between Marcus Ehning and Willem Greve. I said: go for Willem, it's easier for the breeding, and he stays in the Netherlands."
Nelson
During a visit to Team Nijhof, Van den Broek heard that a foal by Highway was born at Mark Kuipers' in Hengelo. "I went to see it with Klaas Mosterd, and he bought him. That was Nelson. Renée de Weert rode him in the VSN Trophy when he was three, and they finished fourth. When he was four, Wilgo van der Mheen bought Nelson, based on my advice." At five, Nelson won the Hendrix Cup, and with Renée de Weert, he placed second in the Blom Cup. At the Lanaken World Championships, they had a rail down in the first round and finished twelfth in the consolation final.
Preparing and Working Towards Championships
"We won't be jumping a lot in this clinic," says Henk van den Broek. "In the education and management of a young showjumping horse, there's more to be done than just jumping. In this clinic, we want to show how to prepare a horse for a competition and work towards a championship." The clinic takes place on Thursday, February 1, during the Onori show.
The KWPN Stallion Show is gearing up again. The world's largest stallion inspection will take place from January 31 to February 3 in Den Bosch. Ticket sales have already started, and KWPN members naturally receive a discount for the KWPN Stallion Show. It promises to be four fantastic days once again.
